THE LAST WATCH


I still feel the cold of the nights
on the streets where flames and fists ruled.
Stood firm in the noise, in the shouts and the smoke,
saw many fighting with brutal hate,
who later took seats on politicians' benches.
I pulled people from darkness, from need,
held their hands at the edge of death.
Carried comrades through pain and danger,
bound by a loyalty that was unbreakable.


But now I rest, my heart grows still,
my duty done, as it willed.
The wounds fade, the scars recede,
in peace, I now my life can see...........................................
